James Norton

James J. Norton, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 7, 2010 in Cocoa Beach. Jim was born on May 18, 1914 in Donora, PA to the late Joseph & Sarah Norton. Growing up during the great depression, he graduated from Donora High School and later became a student – athlete at the California University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Norton’s academic pursuits were delayed, so he could honorably serve our country during WWII, as a Corporal in the Marines.
Jim moved to Florida in 1947 and began a distinguished career in education. He started as a physical education teacher and retired in 1977 as a Deputy Superintendent of Dade County.
He became one of the seven members of ""Cal U’s"" 2003 Hall-of-Fame Class.
He is survived by his brothers, Raymond (Dorothy) and Bob Norton; sister-in-law’s, Martha Jane, Margaret Marie and Kathleen Norton; adoring companion, Pauline Connolly; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Harriet; brothers, Eugene, Paul and Ralph Norton; sister, Margaret McConville; step-brother, John Daugherty and step-sister, Elizabeth Terza.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated (TODAY) 12PM, Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the Church of Our Saviour in Cocoa Beach.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s name to the American Heart Association, 237 East Marks St., Orlando, FL 32803.
