Dewitt James Lowell, Md

Dewitt James Lowell July 1922 September 2011 resident of Edmonds, Washington died peacefully Friday 30th after a period of declining health. He was born in New York City to Clara Leah Horn and Nat Lowell. He is the last and youngest of four children. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Nada Paulsen Lowell and four children Nana Lowell, Lori Smith and Briant L. and Kent Lowell. Jim married Nada, a Utah native, in California where they lived for over 15 years, later moving to Norway, Maryland, Utah and Washington State. A funeral is not planned, he is donating his body to science, but memorials will be announced to friends and family. Dr. Lowell was a biochemist, physician, inventor, entrepreneur and inveterate traveler. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago and an MD from the University of Illinois. He had an academic career as Acting Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and as an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of West Virginia. Later he had a successful medical practice in Canoga Park, California where he was also a co-founder of several physician-owned community hospitals. He co-founded Reference Laboratory which was a specialized bio-analytic lab offering the first automated digital analyses. Other achievements include serving as a chemist consultant to the Manned Space Laboratory (NASSA), Assistant to the Administrator of HSMHA in Washington D.C., and as a consultant to Medtronic. In his later years he pursued ventures in ranching, home construction, real-estate and equity investments among others. He was an avid reader of science fiction, medical science, and investment strategies; and was proficient in Spanish and French.
