Dexter Franklin Miller

Dexter F. Miller was born September 3, 1920 in Marinette, WI, and passed away on October 22, 2013 in Shoreline, WA. He is survived by his precious wife of 64 years, Ruth A. Miller, and six children: sons Dexter Bruce (Daryl), Richard (Lorraine), Paul, and Scott (Laurie), and daughters Linda Floodeen (Gordon) and Marla Miller (Al). One of 10 children, Dexter is also survived by his sisters Helen Evenson and Mary Edson, and brother Jim Miller. Numerous beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, exchange daughter, nieces, and nephews will also miss their Grandpa, Uncle Sonny, and Papa Bear. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Gwen, and by his parents and several siblings. Dexter grew up on a farm and loved to fish and camp, and used every excuse to take youth groups to camp and enjoy canoeing in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. Part of his lasting legacy to the enjoyment of Gods incredible nature are the beautiful parks and road structures he helped build as part of the CCCs in the 1930s.Dexter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December, 1941 and was a proud veteran of World War II. While serving in the Pacific, a Navy chaplain introduced Dexter to his first love, Jesus, and his Christian faith defined the rest of his life. He received his bachelors degree from Greenville College in IL, and his masters of divinity from Drew University in NJ. Dexter was called to the ministry and served for 45 years as a United Methodist Minister with pastorates in Gouldsboro, PA, Spencer, NY, and MN (Coon Rapids, Wyoming, Chisholm, Sherburn/Welcome). After a long, two-week retirement, he was recruited and served for the next 12 years as a visitation pastor in Fairmont, MN.Dexters life was devoted to serving others. After moving to Edmonds he and Ruth faithfully helped every Monday morning at the Edmonds Food Bank. He also enjoyed his affiliation with Edmonds Kiwanis and Edmonds VFW Post 8870. His favorite hymn, Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine, echoes the themes of his life and his commitment to God, his family, and his ministry to others. Dexter is loved and respected by his family and dearly missed by all those who knew him. A private family service is planned, followed by interment at Tahoma National Cemetery, Maple Valley, WA.
