Donalda Steger-Nakkerud

Aug 28, 1918 — Jun 7, 2011

Donalda Steger-Nakkerud was born August 28 and died 6/7/2011 of leukemia. Born at home in Hanks, ND to Mary Shaw and Karl Sather, she moved to CA in childhood. She returned to ND after her parents lost their farm due to drought and debt. Donalda remained in Hanks until the WWII push to recruit workers for the defense industry lured the family to Seattle. A very young Donalda met and married George Steger there. Together they enjoyed fishing, camping, clam digging, gardening and rock hounding. The couple raised three children, Carl, Daniel and Susan on south Beacon Hill, and all of them attended college. Daniel graduated with honors from the UW with a double major in Elementary Education and Geography, and was a teacher. George and Daniel both preceded Donalda in death. Donalda was the proud grandparent of Susans children Danielle and George. Donalda was retired from King County, where she worked for system Services and Solid Waste. She volunteered at elementary schools, boy scouts, campfire girls, March of Dimes, American Red Cross, AHA, and ACS. She attended Seattle First Baptist Church and was past president of the Womans World Fellowship. Donalda was remarried to Trygve (Ted) Nakkerud, a well-known leader in Sons of Norway and the Leif Ericson Lodge. He preceded her in death in 1995. Donalda received her thirty-year pin from Sons of Norway, Leif Ericson Lodge. Donalda requested memorials be sent to support scholarships c/o the Scholarship Committee, Sons of Norway, Leif Ericson Lodge, 2245 NW 57th St, Seattle, WA 98107 . Donalda traveled across all of N America and Europe, never admitting even to Customs officials that her age was anything other than thirty-nine. She will be buried in Seattle with her parents, first husband George, and son Daniel. God bless you mother and Nana.
