Douglas Evans Ludig

Douglas Evans Ludig, a devoted husband, father, and veteran, passed away on January 24, 2026. Born in Aurora, Illinois, on March 6, 1947, Doug and his sister, Pam, were raised with love by their mother, Golda. After attending local schools and completing a year at Aurora College, Doug enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. With the help of his future father-in-law, he was eventually transferred to Sand Point Naval Air Station. Doug’s commitment to his country spanned 24 years across active duty and the reserves, from which he retired with the rank of Petty Officer First Class. In addition to his Navy career, Doug was a dedicated professional who spent 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service. During his long tenure, he served in several capacities, including time as a draftsman, mail carrier, and mail handler. Following his retirement from the Post Office, he continued to stay active by working at his local Home Depot. Doug’s greatest legacy began at age 19 when he met 17-year-old Gail at a dance hall named the New Place in Illinois. They quickly fell in love and were married on May 17, 1969. After a few early apartments, they found their long-term home in the winter of 1974. In this home, they welcomed their son, Josh, followed nearly seven years later by their daughter, Amy. Doug was a devoted husband and father, often found on the sidelines of the kids' sporting events with his camcorder in hand. He loved to play games with the kids and was a legendary practical joker. In his later years, he had the honor of becoming a grandfather and, more recently, a great-grandfather. Doug was a kind and loving soul who is deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gail; sister, Pam; son, Josh; daughter, Amy (husband Jamie); grandchildren, Joshua (fiancée Taylor), Lily, and Liam; and great-grandchildren, Dayton and baby Luca Douglas.
