Fred Albert Cochran, Jr.

Fred Albert Cochran died peacefully on December 19, 2012. He was born on June 23, 1922 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle to Fred Albert Cochran, Sr., and Eve Olive Goode Cochran. He was a graduate of Queen Anne High School and the University of Washington with a degree in geology. Fred taught both math and science at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor in the late 1940s, and at Jane Adams Middle School in Seattle during the early 1950s. He spent most of his career in school administration, first as the Director of Audio Visual and Libraries for the Seattle Public Schools, and in the late 1960s and 1970s for the Edmonds Public Schools. In the mid 1950s Fred was the host for the educational TV program Geology of the Pacific Northwest. He was a member of the Washington Education Association, the National Education Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. Fred served in the US Navy during WWII from September 17, 1942 until February 22, 1946. He saw action in the Pacific, Europe, Asia, and in North Africa. His medals included American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, European African ME Area Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and an Honorable Discharge. Fred was married to Kathleen Johnson Cochran for 56 years until her death in 2001, and is survived by his three children, Philip Cochran (wife Andra), Janis Smith (husband Floyd), and Barbara Conklin. He is also survived by his three grandchildren Kelsey Conklin Bellin (husband Jesse), Cheryl Conklin, Jesse Cochran, and his great-grandson due in March, 2013. The Cochran family moved to Edmonds in 1951, and Fred continued to live in the family home until a year ago. Fred loved life, his family, and friends. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed writing poetry, hiking, fly fishing, mountain climbing, painting, and listening to classical music. He will be remembered well by all who knew and loved him.
