George C Makar

As evidenced by his cartoon signature shown above, George was an entertaining and engaging personality. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 26th, three days after his 93rd birthday. Born in Chicago where he excelled in virtually all sports, he attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on a football scholarship, and graduated as an Industrial Engineer. He married Wanda L Graves on June 7, 1940 and had two children, Michal and Amber. In 1950 the family moved to Seattle where he started his 35 plus-year career with the Boeing Company. He worked in both Commercial and Defense divisions and was stationed in Bangor, Maine; Parshall, N.D.; Kimball, Nebraska; and Duluth, Minnesota helping install missile bases, and in Huntsville, Alabama where he was part of the team that put a man on the moon.Wanda suffered a serious stroke in 1966 and George took on the additional role of being a loving caregiver to her. He and Wanda moved to Edmonds in 1972 where they led a full active life that included travel, attending live theater and the Seattle Pops on a regular basis. George was an accomplished and graceful dancer, golfer, and bowler and avid baseball fan who went to Spring Training in Arizona for nearly 20 years. After Wandas death in 1996, George became an active member of the Edmonds Senior Center and in 2005 moved to Edmonds Landing Retirement Center where he developed many new friends among the residents and the staff that enjoyed his joi de vivre. When his health began to fail in the last year he moved to Brighton Gardens in Bellevue to be nearer his family, but was still able to lift the spirits of many in this new home as well.He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda and his brothers, Matthew and Theodore. George is survived by his two children, son Michal Makar of Bellevue and daughter Amber Althage of Bellingham; four grandchildren: Rodney and Thomas Anderson, Sarah Makar, and Karen Makar Comrie; four great grandchildren: Matthew Anderson, Hollie Anne Anderson, Caitlyn Makar, and Alexander Comrie; and one great-great grandchild, Connor Anderson.
