Jessica Witteman Nathans

January 27, 1926 – June 24, 2021 Jessica Witteman Nathans (born Jessica Margaret Witteman in Manhattan, NY) died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, June 24, 2021, in Everett, Washington at the age of 95. A scheduled viewing to pay respects is set for Friday, July 2, from 2 pm – 5 pm, at Beck’s Funeral Home, 405 5th Avenue South, Edmonds, WA. Phone 425 771 1234. Known as “Jessie” to her friends, she hailed from Beacon, New York, where she spent her formative years with her maternal grandmother, Constance Mc Nicol. Jessica was the only child of Charles R. Wittemann, an early pioneer in aviation, and Margaret Mc Nicol Wittemann, a New York hospital nurse. Jessica completed a BS degree in chemistry at Antioch University (Ohio) and took her first chemist job in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she met the love of her life, David S. Nathans, a medical supplies representative, who visited her company. Later, she studied accounting and worked as an accountant for the Pittsburgh Presbytery. Jessica raised two sons and enjoyed her life in Pittsburgh with her husband of 50 years, until David passed away in 1999. She shared her independent years between Washington state and Arizona traveling with her Cairn terrier, Sam, before returning recently to live with her son, Joseph, for her autumn years. She was an avid member of the Mukilteo Presbyterian Church for many years and enjoyed its Wednesday bible study group. She is survived by two sons: Joseph W. Nathans of Everett, Washington, and his wife Kathleen, and Mark G. Nathans, and his wife Colleen, of Gilbert, Arizona; her adult granddaughters, Lisa E. Nathans of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Jennifer K. Nathans, of Seattle, Washington. In her younger years, Jessie loved to play tennis, sail boats on the lake, garden any soil she could find, golf, and paint watercolor scenes in the Sonoran Desert and Mukilteo Beach. In Arizona, her friends played bridge, taught her piano, and enjoyed lunch out. Her favorite “reads” included her bible, the Wall Street Journal, and detective mysteries by Janet Evanovich. Jessie was a “grand grandma,” says her adult granddaughters who adored her and will miss her unwavering attention and support through their life journeys.
