Jonathan Carl Trahar

Jonathan Carl (Jon) Trahar (1939 2013) Died in Edmonds, WA June 26, 2013 at age 73 after a brief illness. Born August 21, 1939 in London, UK to John Trahar and Joan Aline Trahar (nee Cooper). John, Joan and Jon returned to Australia in 1941. Jon grew up and was educated in Sydney Australia. Wanting to see something of his country, he worked as a jackeroo (trainee stockman) in Longreach, Queensland. A horse riding accident and broken leg changed his plans. Combining the best of city and country, Jon became a stock and station agent with Shute Bell Badgery and Lumby, wool brokers. The 1960s being the start of the computer age, Jon took an aptitude test and began computer programming with ICL computers. His return to Sydney also allowed him to meet and marry Margaret Peggy Fox of Methuen, MA on May 7, 1966. Jon migrated to New York with Peggy and sons John and Mike in 1970. Daughter Sue was born in 1971. Jon joined Barclays Bank International in Manhattan where he initially worked on their ICL computers and later helped with the conversion to IBM computers. He had a 26-year career with Barclays. A jack of all trades, master of many, Jon enjoyed skiing, sailing, kayaking, hiking, buying and selling antiques, domestic and foreign travel and solving the New York Times crossword puzzles. He received a certificate from New York University for Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts in 1997. For several years in the early 2000s Jon was a co-owner of a racehorse named Mosman Bay which enjoyed some racing success in New Jersey and New York. Jon and Peggy moved from Rye, NY on Long Island Sound, driving cross country in seven days, to Edmonds in June 2005 and have enjoyed living on Puget Sound since. Jon was a loving and proud father of three, grandfather of six. Survived by his wife of 47 years, two sons, John (and wife Jamie) of Austin, TX, Michael of Annapolis, MD, one daughter Susanne Mauney, wife of Josh, of Edmonds; grandchildren Georgia, Noah, Emma, Maggie, Ryan, and Calum; a brother Peter (and wife Peta) of Bilpin, NSW, Australia, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jon and his positive outlook on life will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
