Larry Thomas Scoles

Born Feb. 24, 1934 in Port Angeles, WA to Robert and Arlene Scoles, Larry passed away on December 18, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Robert Bob Larry. Larry grew up in Port Angeles and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1952 where he played football and track and field. He met his wife Colleen in 1951 when she and her family moved from Lake Forest Park to Port Angeles. They were married on October 10, 1952. He served a six-year printing apprenticeship at the Port Angeles Evening News and after moving to Mountlake Terrace in 1958 became a printer at the Seattle Times, retiring in 1999. Larry was an avid steelhead fisherman and was a member of the P.A. Steelhead Club before moving away. He also was a deer and elk hunter and spent many hunting seasons at the family cabin near Forks, WA with his Dad and their hunting buddies. He had many hobbies; an early passion was photography and that continued through his life. He also spent many hours at his computer composing the Scoles Family Newsletter in which he mailed out issues almost every month for over 30 years. He was always involved in the planning of most of the Scoles Family Reunions including roasts of older family members and lots of practical jokes. For the last 10 years or so, special to him were the annual long April weekend gatherings with his kids, grandkids, cousins and friends. Everyone either RVd or stayed in housing at Fort Worden in Port Townsend. In June of each year, the same group (or gang as he called them) would spend several days at Lake Chelan. The annual Chelan trips began back in 1979. He enjoyed good micro-brews and looking up the Micro Breweries in each town that he and his wife traveled through on their vacation road trips. Their trips to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks were some of his favorites. Visiting the coastal beaches of Washington and Oregon was another joy of his. He always photographed the lighthouses, cloud formations and sunsets. An annual September event, since 1994, was staying at the same beach house in Lincoln City, OR for a week of beachcombing and hunting for agates. After being coaxed the first time to take a trip to Hawaii he couldnt wait to return. His third trip was in 2002 to celebrate his and Colleens 50th Wedding Anniversary. Joining them for a week in Maui were their daughters and their spouses, grandchildren, cousins and friends. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime wonde experience. After retiring he liked spending time at the cabin. He made beautiful walking sticks and canes out of devils club and cascara. He gave them away to everyone he could. His latest hobby was collecting pretty rocks from several of the local beaches and Olympic Peninsula beaches. He added them to their yard creating a beautiful rock garden. Larry leaves his wife of 59 years Colleen; daughters, Stephanie (Joe) Kinney, Casey Rooney and Kelly (John) Mattison; grandchildren: Melanie Scoles and fianc Jerry Lewis, Jaime (Eric) Bickmeier, Jeremy (Kim) Rooney, Jessica Rooney, Caleb Rooney, Chase Mattison and fianc Katie Newsome; six great-grandchildren and a new great-grandbaby expected in February 2012.
