Magne N. Aadland

Magne N Aadland was born February 3rd, 1926 on Karmoy, Norway. Magne was 90 years old when he passed away peacefully on November 10, 2016 in Edmonds, WA.Magne was born the 1st child of Emma and Nils Aadland in Aadland, Akrehamn on the island of Karmoy on the coast of the North Sea. His brother Ingolv was only 13 months younger, and was also his lifelong friend and business partner. During Magnes childhood Norway was a very poor country, and families needed to be resourceful and frugal. The boys made homemade sor balls to play with, and made their own toys out of wood. Magne loved wandering around Akrasand, playing and fishing at the beach, as a child. When he was 14 the Germans invaded and began a 5-year occupation of Norway. The Nazis took over the schoolhouse, effectively ending further educational opportunities.It was a precarious time balancing wartime survival with Nazi oppression. Magnes father had been fishing in America, and was unable to return, which meant Magne and Ingolv were responsible for keeping the farm running and taking care of their mother. Magne also picked up odd jobs as well as herring fishing to make ends meet. There were times when coffee could only be made from tree bark, and Magne told the story of one Christmas when the best gift the family received was an orange. He was so pleased with his inventiveness in extending its pleasure by burning the leftover peel on the stove and filling the house with a pleasant citrusy fragrance.Magne immigrated to the US at the age of 21 to fish with his father, first in New York, and then in Massachusetts. Together they sponsored several other young Norwegian men immigrating to the US to fish following WWII.Magne was drafted into the Army and given the option to gain his US citizenship, or be deported, so he joined the Army as a Private on Nov 29, 1950. He served in Korea and was released from the Army as a Sergeant in 1952.He met Hildur while she was visiting her brother in Massachusetts. They were married within a year. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2015. Magne Hildur started their family in Massachusetts, where Magne Ingolv fished on the Sea Gold in Cape Cod. The family moved to Fort Myers, Florida in 1978. Magne fished for shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico until he retired. Upon retirement Magne Hildur split their time between Washington State and Karmoy, Norway. They settled in Richmond Beach in their new house, near both of their childrens families in 2011.He taught himself to play guitar and the harmonica, loved to sing, especially at the Karmoy Club Christmas parties and he loved candy, cookies, and all things sweetand loved his family. Magne is survived by his wife Hildur, daughter Evelyn (Thomas), son Norman (Christina), and his grandchildren Tyler, Hanna, Luke and Nicholas. Magne is also survived by his many dear extended Norwegian family and friends, both in the US and in Norway.
