Marie Katherine Nichols

Marie was born Sept. 15, 1913 in Auburn, Washington to Frederick and Theresa Smith. She spent her childhood in Auburn and attended high school at Aquinas Academy in Tacoma, WA.Marie enjoyed playing tennis and was an avid skier. As a young woman she joined the Penguin Ski Club of Mount Rainier and won numerous medals in the events that she entered.Marie married Harold W. Conlkin in 1937. She and Harold had 4 children: Susan, 1938; Harold W. Jr. Bill, 1940; Steven, 1946; and Theresa, 1950.When Harold was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1953, Marie was left to manage the household and raise the children. Harold died in 1971. She married Oliver Loehr in 1978. Sadly he died 12 months later from a heart attack. In 1987 she married Bill Nichols. Bill passed away from Alzheimers disease in 2010. Marie moved into Snoqualmie Valley Elder Care in North Bend, WA and lived out her remaining years there. On Sept. 15, 2013 she celebrated her 100 birthday amongst family and friends. She passed away January 18, 2014.Marie was preceded in death by her daughters Theresa at the age of 25 and Sue at the age of 46. She is survived by her two sons, Bill and Steve, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.People that knew Marie would say that she was truly a remarkable and selfless person. She was dearly loved by everyone she came in contact with. There will be a graveside service at Holyrood Cemetery on March 1 at 11am.
