Norma Adele Stewart

Norma Adele (Schlagenhauf) Stewart was born on November 20, 1915 in St. Louis, MO to Mabel Haskins and Edward Schlagenhauf, DDS. Norma attended Washington University where she was president of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She met her husband Thomas Lynn Stewart while they were both working at Stix, Baer, and Fuller department store in St. Louis. They married in 1938. After the birth of their first two sons Barry and Douglas, they moved to Seattle and settled in the Montlake neighborhood. The family welcomed three more children Linda, Cathy, and Scott. In 1958, they moved to Edmonds where they lived for the rest of their lives. After Lynns death in 1982, Norma, who was a devoted member of the Methodist Church, spent nearly two decades volunteering as a wedding coordinator and manager of the thrift store for the United Methodist Church of Edmonds.Norma was a gentle and steadfast matriarch to the sizeable Stewart clan, subtly guiding each to find his or her own unique way. She had a teasing sense of humor, a warm, inclusive smile, and never raised her voice. A voracious reader and accomplished knitter, she always had fresh chocolate chip cookies ready for little (and big) hands.She died peacefully in her own home, surrounded by family, on February 25, 2012. Norma was preceded in death by her husband, T. Lynn Stewart, and her brother Maurice, who died in childhood. She will be deeply missed by her five children Barry Stewart (Trudy), Douglas Stewart (Carmi), Linda Van Nest (Jay), Cathy Stewart, and Scott Stewart (Tammy), and her many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
