Patrick Michael Carter
Mar 16, 1953 — Jun 16, 2020
Born March 16, 1953 in Portland, Oregon Passed away June 16, 2020 (age 67) at his home in Bothell, WA Pat was the 2nd of 8 children born to Donald and Dorothy Carter. He had to patiently wait until the 7th child was born to have a brother. He grew up in a close parish and neighborhood community with his cousins living only blocks away. And although he tormented his 6 sisters at times growing up, he grew to be their rock and counselor and defender. Pat graduated from Holy Redeemer grade school, (where he and his cousin served as altar boys) and from Central Catholic High School (where he and same cousin met regularly with the Dean of discipline). Pat finished his education at Oregon State University. Pat loved the outdoors. As a young man he attended Outward Bound Survival School in Alaska. He loved it there, spending additional time in the home of his cousin and her family. He returned looking like the original Mountain Man and with many stories of his adventures. Pat worked 35 years for Fred Meyers. There he met the love of his life, Marne. Marne and her 2 young children, Jesse and Alicia were welcomed into the Carter clan July 13, 1985. The family grew with the addition of their daughter Jourdan, and then their son Christopher. They have been blessed with numerous grandchildren. They also count 4 dogs, 1 cat, 18 chickens and 3 goats as family members. His love for the outdoors continued to define his life. He and Marne created a paradise on their land in Bothell. He was extremely proud of his garden and was always experimenting with new ways to grow vegetables, grapes, fruit trees, etc. He shared his bounty with everyone. When Pat entered a room, his presence always changed the dynamics for the better. He had a gentle, thoughtful manner. He gave you his full attention when conversing. He wanted to know about your life, dreams, and ideas. He was well read and loved to learn. He could speak on any subject (child rearing, history, science, gardening, etc) but not as an authority, he spoke as a student willing to listen and learn and exchange ideas with those he was speaking with. Everyone Pat met felt respected, calmer and happier after a conversation with him. Family was everything. When our parents passed away, he and Marne opened their home for the family gatherings. This in part led them to constantly update the living space to accommodate our growing family. His happiest times were when he was surrounded by his family, immediate and extended, especially if it was at their home. He lived by the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would want to be treated. Pat loved his wife, Marne more than anything, always saying he was the luckiest man. We know there was a celebration with all our beloved family and friends that have passed before, welcoming him to heaven. So, our tears are both sad and joyful.
