Ray David Johnson

January 16, 1921 — October 10, 2009

Ray D. Johnson went peacefully to be with the Lord at age 88, surrounded by his loving family. Ray was born in Mankato, Minnesota to Axel Albin and Alice Johnson.He was part of the Greatest Generation and served in World War II, earning four medals for his years of service in the Merchant Marines. He sailed the world and saw much of its beauty while living through the horrors of war. His written memoirs are a treasure to his family. After the war, Ray returned to Seattle and married the love of his life, Lucy Recchio. They celebrated 62 wonde years of marriage on 9/27/09. Ray and Lucy worked together in the grocery business, first owning Market Street Grocery in Ballard and later as partners in the Kenmore IGA. Ray is survived by Lucy, their four sons and their wives, David (Teddye), Randy (Debbie),Dean (Karen) Brian (Beverly) 9 grand children, 1 great grandson, his brother Dale, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Ray loved his family deeply, and enjoyed golf, poetry, classic cars, card games, cribbage, tricks, and anything else that brought family and friends together. His great sense of humor, strong wit, and zest for life brought great joy to those around him and he will be greatly missed.
