Alice Mullins

"Alice Mullins, 95, beloved wife for 67 years of Jack Mullins, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at her home at Loomis Village in South Hadley, Mass. Alice was born Dec. 2, 1919 in Worcester, Mass. to Lawrence and Ruth (Brown) Drury. At age 10 she moved to Newton, Mass. where she attended the public schools, graduating from Newton High School in l937, then graduating from Barnard College where she met the love of her life, John (Jack) Madison Mullins, in 1941, a student at Columbia University. They married in 1942. During WWII Alice worked in the Research Department of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. After the war, they moved to New York City where they started a family. Following the birth of three sons, John, Ross and David, the family moved to Demarest, N.J. where they thrived for 46 years and grew an amazing garden. During this time Alice served as den mother for her son's Cub Scout packs and as a volunteer in the Junior League of Englewood, N.J. For 8 years she worked as a secretary to a scientist at Columbia University's Lamont Geological Observatory, which she found fascinating. When Jack joined the board of trustees of the American College in Paris she opened the college's first admissions office in the U.S. out of her home. She continued in this volunteer position for 12 years during which time the college became a 4-year institution and changed its name to the American University of Paris. With the family grown and scattered, they moved in 1996 to Loomis Village in South Hadley to be near her son David. While there, she continued her passion for growing tomatoes and served as a President of the Residents' Association. Alice was preceded in death by her husband Jack who died in 2009. She will be deeply missed by her three sons, John and his wife, Donna of Golden, CO, Ross and his wife Maria of Madrid, Spain, and David and his wife Betsy of Amherst, MA. Seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren spread across three continents also survive her. All services are private to the family and Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral home has been entrusted with arrangements.
