Brian L. Brougham

It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the unexpected passing of Brian L. Brougham, who departed this world on November 9, 2024, in Wells, NY, while doing what he loved, a successful hunt. Born on July 28, 1960, in Holyoke, MA, Brian lived a life marked by steadfast dedication to his family, his career, and his passions.

Brian was the beloved son of the late Harry L. and Rita (Dugre) Brougham, and he shared a remarkable and enduring partnership of 39 years with his wife, Bonnie J. (Zwingelstein) Brougham. He leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter Molly (Cory) Ricketts; siblings, Cindy Brougham Brown, Gary Brougham (Sandy), Fran Lofland (Nathan Thompson) and lifelong friend and former brother-in-law, Michael Lofland, and Carla Chaisson (David). Brian was proud of his extended family including 8 nieces and nephews, 5 great nieces and nephews and 1 great-great niece.  He was predeceased by his brother, Michael "Mickey" Brougham, brother-in-law, Kevin Brown, and nephew, Scott Brougham. His legacy continues in the hearts of his family, with the joyful anticipation of a grandson expected in February of 2025.

An alumnus of Belchertown schools and a graduate of Belchertown High School in 1978, Brian dedicated over 31 years of his professional life to the Hampshire County Sheriff's Department. As a corrections officer, he was known for his unwavering commitment to the community and his compassion for those in his care. Before joining the department, he worked in the forest industry and construction, fields that honed his skills and deepened his appreciation for the natural world.

Brian was an ardent outdoorsman, whose knowledge and passion for white-tail deer were unmatched. His love for hunting and bass fishing was a shared bond with his daughter, and he found great joy in the tranquility of birdwatching. Brian cherished wildlife and cherished the serene beauty of nature, often rising early to embrace it in its fullness. His rugged explorations took him across New England and into the heart of Canadian wilderness, with the Quabbin Reservoir holding a special place in his heart.

Friends and family are warmly invited to gather and remember Brian on November 18, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home. Here, stories will be shared, and his life will be celebrated among all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In honor of Brian's memory and love for his community, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Friends of the Belchertown Police K-9 Unit.
