Carlena M. Howe

" Carlena M. (Houghton) Howe, 88, of Jabish St., died April 21, 2007 at Baystate Medical Center. Born on September 14, 1918 in Brattleboro, Vt., she was the daughter of the late George and Hazel (Howard) Houghton. Mrs. Howe has lived in Belchertown since 1977 and previously lived in Hadley. In her younger years she worked as an LPN, while she and her husband owned a dairy farm in Brownsville Vt. They bought the Shady Lawn Rest Home in Hadley, which they operated for 17 years. Carlena was a member of the Belchertown, Amherst and Ludlow Grange, life member of the Rebecca’s and an active member of the Belchertown Senior Center. Her husband Wallace A. Howe predeceased her in 2003. She is survived by six children Ronald J. Howe of Hadley, Patricia Ann Fleming of Palmer, Randall B. Howe of Vernon, VT, Craig W. Howe and his wife Julie of Franklin County, Kevin A. Howe and his wife Lori of Montague, and her adoptive son Keith A. Howe also of Montague. She also leaves 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great–great grandchild. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Beers & Story Funeral Home in Belchertown. A calling hour will precede the service from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society 59 Bobala Rd., Holyoke, MA 01040 or the Belchertown Senior Center 60 State St., Belchertown, MA 01007.
