Carol E. Craig

"South Hadley - Carol E. Craig M.D., 91, passed away at her home on April 19, 2015. She was born January 18, 1924 in Cedarburg, WI, daughter of Oliver and Ella (Pergande) Eifler. Carol graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, WI. She moved to the east coast to open a private medical practice and also worked as a physician for Mount Holyoke College. Later, she closed her private practice and became the Director of the Health Service and head physician at Mount Holyoke College. Carol took two leaves of absences from this position, first to be a volunteer physician in Vietnam in 1967, where she was the first woman physician selected for the Vietnam volunteer program and second to be a volunteer physician at the Mount Selinda Hospital in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Africa in 1975. She retired from Mt. Holyoke College in 1989, after working there for 31 years. She was predeceased by her brother Norman Eifler. She is survived by two nephews, three nieces and her many dear close friends. The family wishes to thank the staff at O'Connell Professional Nurse Service, Inc., especially Teresa, for all the loving care they provided to Carol. It is deeply appreciated. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 34 Jarvis Ave. in Holyoke. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the South Hadley Council on Aging at 45 Dayton Street, South Hadley, MA 01075.
