Donald W. Smith

" Donald W. Smith, 80, of George St, died Thursday in Sudbury. Born in Stafford, CT, October 25,1921, he was the son of the late Francis and Idabelle (Bowden) Smith. Mr. Smith grew up in Brimfield and was a graduate of Hitchcock Academy there. He moved to Palmer in 1949, where he raised his family. He was a Veteran of WWII, serving with the Army Air Corps, and was also a Civil War buff, and visited many battlefields. Donald had owned his own plane and flew out of the original Palmer Airport in the early 40s. He worked at Utility Manufacturing in Wilbraham for 45 years, retiring in 1991. Donald is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Gloria Norris, 2 sons Wayne of Townsend, and Kevin of Philadelphia, PA, and a daughter Cheryl Dougherty of Hudson, along with 4 grandchildren, Meghan, Matthew, and Caitlin Dougherty, and Andrew Smith. His children and grandchildren were his biggest interest. Their happiness was his priority. Funeral services will be Sat. at 1:00 p.m. in the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home followed by burial in Brimfield Cemetery. A calling hour will be from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. preceding the service.
