Dorothy L. Downey

"Dorothy L (Bineau) Downey, 89, died peacefully with her family by her side on June 6, 2018 at Mont Marie Healthcare Center in Holyoke. She was born in Holyoke on September 9, 1928 to her loving parents,the late Edward and Mary L. (Gingras) Bineau. She attended Perpetual Help Grammar School and was a graduate of Holyoke High School, class of 1946. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Floyd W. Downey. Dorothy was a woman of deep faith and strength and was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Holyoke. She was employed and retired from Shawmut Bank in 1988 after 31 years of service. She and her husband Floyd enjoyed their years of retirement by volunteering at the Council on Aging in So. Hadley for over 20 years as well as traveling by bus with friends and family, especially to Canada and coast of Maine. Dorothy was an avid reader, loved music, cooking and entertaining her friends and family. She will be forever missed by her two beloved children, her son John Downey and his wife Sydni of Kingston, New York and her daughter Barbara Downey Ferst of South Hadley, along with her dear grandsons Noal Downey of Athens, New York and Andrew Downey of Portola Valley, California and many cherished nieces and nephews and her life-long friends, Bob and Barbara Laverdiere. Besides her parents and husband, Dorothy was predeceased by her loving siblings, Jeannette Alie, Doris Downey, Edward Bineau and Jacqueline Herd and her special godmother, Angeline Gosselin. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 11 at 12:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 54 North Summer St., Holyoke followed by burial in the Veteran's Cemetery, Agawam, MA. A calling hour from 11:00 to 12:00 p.m. at Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton St., will precede the Mass.
