In Loving Memory

With heartfelt sorrow, the family of Gerard "Gerry" P. Bernard announces his passing on August 18, 2024, at the age of 67 in Belchertown, MA. He was born on February 4, 1957, in Springfield, MA, to the late Gerard J. and Helen (Kennedy) Bernard. Gerry's life was marked by service, joy, and an unwavering commitment to loved ones. 

Gerry proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard for 21 years, retiring with honor. He was known as a jack of all trades and wore many hats in his lifetime, including that of a professional clown known as "Sassy the Clown" and an IT Specialist. Through every role, he brought laughter and happiness to those around him, embodying the traits of humor, generosity, and loyalty. 

His affinity for trains led him to become an ardent member of the Amherst Railway Society. Gerry also delighted in the tranquility of fishing and was a keen supporter of his grandchildren's sports endeavors, always their number one fan. An exceptional cook, he was famous for his "7 Seas Seafood Chowder", a dish he loved sharing with family and friends. 

Besides his parents, Gerry was predeceased by his grandson, Joshua Michael Alley. 

Gerry is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Karen (Tucker) Bernard, and their children: daughter Cynthia L. Girard and her husband Kevin, son Joseph A. Bernard and his partner Alexandra, all residing in Belchertown. He also leaves behind his adored grandchildren, Aiden and Julia Girard, and Lucas and Colton Bernard, as well as his sisters Mary Ralph and her husband Allen of Tuxedo, NY, Christine Templeton and her husband William of Atlanta, GA, and Geraldine Berg and her husband David of Washington, D.C. Gerry will also be missed by his brothers, John Bernard of Chicopee, and Paul Bernard and his wife Shirley of Boston; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A visitation will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024, from 3-6 pm at the Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass to honor and celebrate Gerry's life will take place on Tuesday, August 27, at 11 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Palmer, with burial to follow at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery at 1 pm. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home at 9:15 am for a procession to the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations in Gerry's name be made to the Amherst Railway Society, 1130 S Main St., Palmer, MA 01069, symbolizing his lifelong passion for trains and the joy they brought him.  Gerry's spirit will continue to live on through the laughter he inspired, the love he shared, and the cherished memories held by those who knew him.
