June P. Russo

"Monson-June P. (Mercure) Russo, 95, passed away at home with her family by her side on August 25, 2011. Born October 21, 1915 in Warren, MA, she was the daughter of the late Hermetus Mercure and Alice (Rondeau) Giaquinto. She has lived in Monson for the past 40 years, after being raised in the Worcester County area. In 1935, she came to Palmer and entered into the nursing program at the original Wing Hospital, the current site of Country Bank on Main St. in Palmer. Following graduation, she was employed at Wing Hospital and Harrington Memorial Hospital. She later worked in private duty. In 1938, she married and became a homemaker and mother while devoting the rest of her life to her family. June loved gardening, fishing and had fond memories of her fishing trip to the deep woods of Canada with her favorite aunt and uncle. She also took much enjoyment in scratch tickets, the lottery and trips to Mohegan Sun. June will be greatly missed by her children, James M. with whom she lived, David and his wife Debbie of Palmer and Darlene of Monson. She also leaves 3 grandchildren, Craig Felice, Derrick Bates and Angela Long as well as 5 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the Monson Fire Dept and Senior Center for all their help over the years. A special thanks to caregivers Amy Gagnon and Patty Veighey of Palmer VNA along with Sharron Estridge from Greater Springfield Senior Services for the wonderful care they afforded June. And a very special thank you to a special angel Debbie Lawrence, who made her last days so comfortable. Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Beers Story Palmer Funeral Home. A service will be Tuesday, August 30th at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Monson Fire Dept, the Monson Senior Center or Wing VNA and Hospice. "
