"South Hadley - Robert (Bob) McCain, 78, cherished husband, father, grandfather, Pa-Pa, uncle, dear friend, fisherman, and hunter sadly left us on Friday, January 26. Bob was born at the family home in West Springfield on November 8, 1939, son of Eleanor (Shackett) and Harold McCain. He graduated from West Springfield High School and served his country from 1958 to 1962 in the U. S. Navy. He lived in South Hadley for 40 years. Bob worked at Smith and Wesson for 23 years and then changed careers and was a Custodial Supervisor at Hampshire College until his retirement in 2004. Bob loved coaching in the town’s recreational leagues when his son was younger and was a loyal fan to the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins, through thick and thin. Bob was a kind, gentle man who always saw the best in everyone. He had an amazing gift to bring humor into any situation and had such a beautiful sense of humor. First, he modeled kindness, humor, conscientiousness and good advice to his children, and with much pride and love, savored their milestones and accomplishments. His greatest joy was to see their happiness as their families grew. He loved, advised, teased and relished his grandchildren and would be there to support all their endeavors. Bob leaves behind his devoted wife and friend, Norma (Mitchell) and they would have celebrated their 40th anniversary this year. He will be forever missed by his daughter Laurie, and her husband Jason (Moyer) and his son Christopher and his wife Katie. He will be sorely missed at athletic events, birthdays, and holidays by his beautiful grandchildren; Shawn, Samantha (Moyer), Luke, Will and Jack (McCain). Also, sharing in the sadness are his surviving brother, Richard and very caring and devoted in-laws Susan and Flo, and many cherished nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother William and sister, Carolyn, brothers-in-law Doug and Thomas and sister-in-law, Lucille. Fish tales and stories are now silenced, but will not be forgotten by his good fishing and hunting buddies, Jimmy, Dennis, Paul, and Teddy and most faithful companion, Topper. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 1, at 11:00 am at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton Street, South Hadley, Ma.
