James Mchugh

James (Jim) Francis McHugh, 74, of Palmer passed away peacefully at home on November 5th surrounded by his loving family. 

Jim was born on September 9, 1950 in Ware to Bernard Joseph Sr. and Marie-Rose "Angelina" McHugh (Berthiaume.) He was a long time resident of Ware graduating from Ware High School in 1968. In 1969, he joined the U.S.Marine Corps where he courageously fought in the Vietnam War obtaining the rank of Corporal and the National Defense Service Medal before being honorably discharged in 1972. 

Jim went on to meet and marry the love of his life, Irene C. McHugh (Day), on May 21, 1988. Although they were not a likely match with the most opposite of personalities, they valued an identical set of morals which solidified their commitment to each other until Irene preceded him in death just 329 days prior. They most enjoyed their earlier years taking on any adventure they felt fit for the day whether that meant a hike through the Quabbin, tag-saling for antiques, a trip to Hinsdale to bet on the dogs or a simple road trip to explore somewhere new. Jim was most proud in life of his fulfillment of his vows to Irene and his service to his country. 

Jim worked for BigY (Palmer & Ware) from 1989-2002 as an Assistant Night Chief before moving on and retiring from the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler in 2017. He was a true gentleman known for his baby blues, luscious blonde locks (not one gray) and gift of gab. In his free time he could be found being the best husband/dad/grandpa anybody could ask for, reelin' 'em in at a local fishing spot, rooting on the Red Sox and any other New England teams, cashing in a big winner at the lottery office or running errands just to chat it up with endless friends made along the way.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Sally Day, granddaughter who he endearingly referred to as "the light of his life" Jacquelyn Gerry, grandson Michael Day, siblings Janet Harrison (Bob Charpentier), Ronald McHugh (Paul Sielawa) and Kathleen McHugh along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughters Kelly Giguere (Day), Holli Day and brother Bernard Joseph McHugh Jr. 

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Baystate Hospice for their unwavering support, compassion and guidance. There will be no services by request.
