Jane C. Appleby
October 1, 1949 — May 9, 2026
Wilbraham- Jane C. Appleby, age 76, a longtime East Longmeadow and Monson resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2026, following a long period of declining health. She was born in Gouverneur, NY, daughter of the late William and Beulah (Clark) Appleby. Jane was a 1967 graduate of Gouverneur High School and a 1971 graduate of St. Lawrence University where she majored in mathematics. After pursuing graduate studies at SUNY Binghamton, Jane made her way to Massachusetts. Jane joined MassMutual Life Insurance Company in 1973 and spent most of her career working on corporate taxes. She retired as a Second Vice President in 2000.
Jane enjoyed classical music, old movies, and watching sporting events, especially tennis. During her MassMutual years, she participated in bowling, volleyball, and softball leagues. She loved living in the country, travelling to national parks, and visiting Disney. She was a devoted St. Lawrence University alumna, fundraising for the college, connecting with classmates, and attending reunions. She was mother to several beloved cats over the years and was a good aunt to her friends’ dogs. One of Jane’s greatest pleasures in life was enjoying a meal with good friends.
Jane was predeceased by her brother William Appleby, her sister Phylis Tokos, and her nephew Martin Tokos. She is survived by her nephew Joseph (Kathy) Tokos of Minnesota; niece-in-law Lynn Tokos of NY; grandnieces Lorna Harp, Sarah Tokos, Chaya Charles, and Bianca Phillips; and cousins Deb Fogarty, Beverly Miles, and Dave Appleby. She also leaves her longtime friends, Jackie Aiken of Belchertown, Rhae Kennedy of Wilbraham, and Anita Turner of NY. The family would like to thank the wonderful healthcare workers that took such loving care of Jane as her health declined.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA. There will be a calling hour at the church starting at 10:00 am. Donations may be made in memory of Jane to the St. Lawrence University Alumni Fund (www.stlawu.org).
