Palmer – Shirley Mae Nichols, 93, of Palmer, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026 at her home at Keystone Commons in Ludlow, where she has lived for the past 3 years.
Born in Stonington, Connecticut on January 16, 1933, she was the beloved daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Mercier) Gouvin. Shirley was a lifelong resident of Palmer, where she built a life centered on family, friends, and the community she loved.
Shirley had a lifelong love of music and enjoyed playing the organ. She also enjoyed taking weekly lessons at Falcetti Music and looked forward each year to the group's annual trips. She and her late husband, Jean Nichols, shared a passion for antique automobiles. Together they were active members of an antique car club and proudly owned several antique cars over the years, creating many cherished memories with fellow enthusiasts.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jean Nichols in 2010, and her daughter, Donna Marie Nichols in 1998 along with her five siblings.
She leaves behind her loving children, Eugene Nichols, David Nichols and his wife, Susan, Sandy Nichols and her partner, David Cavanaugh ; her cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Reece, and Jessie; and her adored great-grandchildren, Miles, Vivian, Beau, Ford, and Skyann. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 am at St. Thomas Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Shirley's memory to Brookhaven Hospice, 59 Interstate Drive, West Springfield, MA 01089.
