Cynthia Ann Smigiel

March 22, 1953 — May 12, 2026

Granby- Cynthia Ann Smigiel, 73, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, with her loving husband by her side.

Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Cynthia was a cherished daughter of the late George and Mary (McSweeney) Brochu.

Soon after graduating from South Hadley High School, Cynthia began a lifelong career in nursing. As a dedicated registered nurse, she provided compassionate care to countless individuals for over 42 remarkable years before retiring from Holyoke Hospital. Her kindness, strength, and dedication to helping others left a lasting impact on patients, colleagues, and all who knew her.

Outside of her profession, Cynthia found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved taking long walks—often covering five to six miles a day. She also enjoyed photography and taking photos at all events and special occasions. She had a deep appreciation for nature, especially the beach, and enjoyed camping trips that brought her closer to the outdoors she loved. An avid gardener, Cynthia took great pride while tending to her beautiful flower gardens around her home.

Above all else, Cynthia treasured the time she spent with her family and friends. Her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for those close to her will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Besides her parents, Cynthia was predeceased by her brothers-in-law, Joseph and Theodore Smigiel and Richard Grace. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 45 years, Daniel Smigiel; siblings, Marnee Grace, Daniel Brochu and his wife Janet, Antrese McColgan and her husband Thomas, and Jon Brochu and his wife Debra; brother-in-law, Ronald Smigiel and his wife Phyllis; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026 with a period of visitation from 10:00-11:30am and a Catholic service to begin at 11:30am at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow in West St. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Holyoke VNA and Hospice Life Care, 575 Beech St. Holyoke, MA 01040 or to the American Cancer Society by visiting American Cancer Society.

Cynthia’s legacy is one of compassion, strength, and love—qualities that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
