Kenneth W Merchant
October 26, 1958 — December 4, 2025
Kenneth W. Merchant, 67, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025 at his home with his family at his side. Born on October 26, 1958, in Holyoke, MA, he was the son of the late Mark and Lucille (Barthelette) Merchant. Ken dedicated his life to education and service, leaving an indelible mark on his community. He began his career at the Belchertown State School and then went on to Brightside in West Springfield before spending many fulfilling years as a woodworking teacher at Center School in Holyoke. After teaching, Ken drove as a school bus driver for over a decade for Five Star in Chicopee, where he was known for his good sense of humor and gentle nature. He was the type of person that you met once and never forgot. He was selfless, positive and liked by all. A skilled craftsman, Ken had a passion for woodworking, cabinet making, and years ago, the creation of Adirondack chairs. In his sons' youth, he enjoyed coaching them and was an active member of the Chicopee Sportsman's Club. Furthermore, he embraced the art of woodturning and pen making, showcasing his creativity and dedication to his craft. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Barbara (Wright) Merchant; his sons, Timothy Merchant and his wife Holly, and Jonathan Merchant; a devoted brother, David Merchant, and his wife Beth; and cherished grandchildren, Tyler and Kylee. Ken was also preceded in death by his siblings, Linda English and Michael Merchant. Visitation will be held on December 10, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, where friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of his life. The family invites memories to be shared during the visitation by writing memories on a memory card. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice, honoring Ken's generous and uplifting spirit.
