Margaret R. Slate

Margaret R. (Vanderpoel) Slate, 88, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026. Born in Holyoke on January 12, 1938, she was the daughter of Andrew and Ida (Phinney) Vanderpoel. Peg was a graduate of South Hadley High School, a communicant of the Church of Christ in Granby, and a longtime Granby, MA resident. In 1956 she married the love of her life USAF Master Sgt. Ronald Slate Sr. They traveled the world with their three children, serving in Louisiana, Ohio, Germany and South Korea. They returned to Granby in 1975 and were happily married for 65 years. Peg retired from Mount Holyoke College where she managed Blanchards Dining Hall and Snack Bar. In her leisure she enjoyed needle work, sewing and gardening. She and her husband loved watching the Red Sox and traveling to Humarock Beach. More than anything, she enjoyed hosting Sunday dinners and holidays with all of her family. She was predeceased in 2021 by her husband Ron. Her memory will forever remain with her children Ron Slate Jr. and wife Phyllis, Linda Hartbarger and husband Rick, Kevin Slate and wife Victoria; 6 grandchildren, Brenda Jacques (Edward), Jeremy Hartbarger (Jennifer), Rebecca Knowles (John), Alison Slate (Ben), Brien Slate, and Kyle Slate; 6 great grandchildren Anna, Ella, Mason, Caden, Ezra, and Adele. Calling hours will be Sunday, September 27 from 2-4 pm at the Beers and Story South Hadley Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Monday, September 28 at 10 am with burial to follow beside her husband at West St. Cemetery in Granby. Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
