Maryon Duran Alvarado
05/31/1927 - 07/01/2026
By Maryon Duran Alvarado
I was born in the small town of Gonzales, a second child to my parents Joaquin and Josefina Duran on May 31, 1927.
I loved and excelled in school. School was what I enjoyed the most. I also loved growing up in a small town surrounded by my grandparents, uncles, aunts and family, where everyone knew everyone.
Weekends were spent playing at the slough catching polliwogs, butterflies and sliding down the dry grassy hills on cardboard boxes. I loved the pre-WW2 lifestyle.
I left Gonzales in 1942 at the age of 15 to come to Monterey to work in the canneries. Shortly thereafter I met and married Phil Alvarado. We were married 61 years before his passing in 2003. We had 7 children, Sas, Rick, Roseanne, Cynthia, Dyan & twin daughters Denise and Debra.
I retired at age 83 after 39 years of food service for Carmel Unified School District.
Maryon is survived by her daughters Roseanne Root (Garry), Dyan McAuley (Eddie), and Son in law Ken Ferrante (Cynthia), grandchildren Denise Alvarado, Timour Fong (Vicki), Gary Grewell (Bean), JoJo Grewell (Ashley), Colby Lee Grewell, Angel Nevis (Dan) and Elizabeth Ferrante (Emily) Great-grandchildren Frankie, Irie, Isla, Savannah, Camden, Cali & Bryson as well as numerous nieces, nephews, Goddaughters and Godsons.
