David V. Hanson, Sr.

David V. Hanson Sr., 95, of Fonda, New York, passed away peacefully at his home, where he had lived for 73 years, on June 19, 2026. Born on May 21, 1931, at his family’s farmhouse in Fonda, David leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion.

He is survived by five children: Donna Egelston (Patrick) from Tribes Hill, New York; Janet Edick (Jesse) from Clarksboro, New Jersey; Joyce Yates (John) from Saratoga Springs, New York; Julie Picher (Tom) from Wellesley, Massachusetts; and David Hanson Jr. (Tamara) from Epworth, Georgia. He also had two stepchildren: Steve Diviyak (Teresa) and Bonnie Havlicek (Greg). David treasured his role as a grandfather to ten grandchildren: Jill Trainor, Jennifer Logue, Jesse David Edick (Danielle), Christopher Egelston, Justin Egelston, Jonathan Hanson (Sarah), Steven Hanson (Megan), David Hanson III, Kevin Hanson, and Thomas Picher, along with four step-grandchildren: Jacob, Morgan, Rebecca, and Conner. Additionally, he leaves behind 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

David was deeply grateful for the unwavering support of his devoted caregiver and niece, Joie Hanson. He is also survived by his younger brother, Kenneth Hanson (Dawn) of Fonda, New York. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 36 years, Betty Poultney Hanson, the mother of his children, as well as his second wife of 23 years, Emily Diviyak Hanson. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Richard L. Hanson Jr., George Hanson, Charles Hanson, his sister Betty Brownell, and his daughter Beatrice.

A member of the Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church, David dedicated 42 years of his career to Sonoco Products in Amsterdam, New York, retiring in 1993 after achieving the remarkable milestone of driving one million safe miles without an accident. Known for his fierce independence, David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, with family being the cornerstone of his life.

David’s passion for camping began in his teenage years and spanned 77 years. He cherished camping trips at a campground in Wells, New York, starting with his wife Betty and their children. This beloved family tradition expanded to include his brothers, sister, and many cousins, solidifying wonderful memories that will be treasured by all who knew him.

If Pop was home, you could find him in the garage, sitting by the fire or on one of his many wheel horses. David will be fondly remembered as “Pop”—the man, the myth, the legend. His love and legacy will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.

Viewing will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Friday, July 10th, followed by a service at 4:00 PM at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart, located at 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY A private burial will take place on Saturday.
