Harry L. Ballard, Jr.

Nov 9, 1942 — Oct 10, 2026

Harry L. Ballard, Jr., better known to his family as “Pop,” of Amsterdam, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, with his children and sister by his side. He was 83 years old.

Pop was born in old San Juan, Puerto Rico, on November 9, 1942, the son of Harry L. and Nery Nolla Ballard, Sr. He worked on his family farm at a young age before serving in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. A proud veteran, Pop was honored to have served his country. He later worked at General Electric and retired from the Watervliet Arsenal in the fall of 1999.

Whether he was enjoying a cup of coffee, settling in to watch an old western, or picking out his favorite snack, Pop found joy in life's simple pleasures. Most of all, Pop was the happiest spending time with his family. He believed family was the most important thing in life and was devoted to supporting his children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. He also treasured visits with his mother and sisters, spending time with them in Puerto Rico and Florida.

Pop was a great storyteller, known for his long tales of adventures, experiences, and travels. Like any good storyteller, he could add a few details along the way, making each story an adventure of its own. To those who knew him, Pop was a great man with an even greater heart, known for his kindness, generosity, and caring spirit.

Pop is survived by his five children and their families: Harry (Jamie), Miguel (Abbey), Eric, Wayne (Laurie), and Amy (Randy). He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy. He is also survived by his siblings, José Domingo, Sheila Nery, Beverley Beatrice, and Magda Eva Elisse, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Pop was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia, with whom he shared more than 65 years of marriage, as well as his parents. Even after Patricia's passing, Pop continued to wear his wedding ring, a quiet reminder of the enduring bond they shared.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, October 21st from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Funeral Home in Amsterdam, followed immediately by a funeral service. Burial will take place at the Mount Carmel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Avenue, Albany, NY 12208, to support veterans throughout the region.
