Carolyn Hayes, age 89, passed away June 18, 2026 at Capstone Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Amsterdam, NY. She was born November 1, 1936, daughter of Roy and Hattie Oare Frederick. She attended local schools and graduated from Gloversville High School in 1954. She attended Nathan Littauer Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1957. Carolyn worked in local hospitals as a Registered Nurse and retired from Tryon, New York Division for Youth in 1997.

She was united in marriage in 1957 to Edward J. Hayes, Jr. of Queens, who passed away in 2000. Carolyn is survived by her children, Daniel of Missouri, Laurie Holmes (Lee) of North Carolina, Lisa (Ken Lento) of Massachusetts, Edward of New Baltimore, and Thomas (Valerie) of Johnstown; grandchildren Aubrie and Erik of North Carolina, Kevin, Emily, and Matt of Missouri, Sophia Claire and Nolan of Johnstown; great grandchildren Constance of Missouri and Korra of Johnstown. Also surviving are two sisters in law Patricia Locke (Joseph) and Ann Waterman of Florida, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Stanley Frederick, two sisters Shirley Frederick and Kathleen Berry, two step fathers George Berry, who was most influential in her life, and Ernest Basileo.

In her younger years, Carolyn enjoyed taking camping trips with her family, volunteering for school functions, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Johnstown High School Band.

She was a member of the Nathan Littauer Hospital Alumni, the Rosary Society and Willing Helpers Board of Managers. She also spent time delivering "Meals on Wheels".

She had a love for family, nursing, and all her animals she had throughout the years. She could always be seen walking her dog through the neighborhood and stopping to visit friends along the way.

Relatives and friends are invited to a calling hour on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 from 10 AM to 11 AM at Church of the Holy Spirit 153 S. Main Street, Gloversville, with a funeral mass immediately following at 11 AM. Burial will immediately follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the James Brennan Humane Society or the Fulton County SPCA.
