Charles W. Van Slyke
May 13, 1933 — Sep 27, 2026
Charles William Van Slyke
It is with great sadness that the family of Charles William Van Slyke announces his passing on September 27, 2026, at the age of 93, while surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 13, 1933, in Gloversville, New York, Chuck was the son of Leo and Lillian Van Slyke. Known affectionately throughout his life as Chuck, Charlie, or Chuckie. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, outdoorsman, and friend.
Chuck had a lifelong passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, and camping, but above all, he treasured the time spent with his family. An avid outdoorsman, he joked that, the greatest catch of his life was marrying Sandy on August 17, 1968. Together they built a loving family and recently celebrated 58 years of marriage.
A graduate of Gloversville High School, Chuck proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1957. During his service, he was stationed aboard the USS Gwin and traveled to France.
Chuck spent his career as a skilled bricklayer, including many years as a member of the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Union Local 2. He took great pride in his work and was known for leaving a distinctive signature pattern in many of the projects he completed.
Throughout his life, Chuck was actively involved in numerous organizations that reflected his love for the outdoors and his community. He was a member of the Sacandaga Swingers Square Dance Club, Ephrata Rod and Gun Club, Fulton-Montgomery Fur Harvesters Association, Foothills Trappers Association, and the Nick Stoner Trailers Snowmobile Club. He was also a lifetime member of both the New York State Trappers Association and the National Trappers Association. In addition, Chuck proudly served as a member of the Lake Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Van Slyke; his daughters, Nadeen (John) Rizzo and Dana (Matthew) Wakefield; and his cherished grandchildren, Emma, Abigail, and Vincent Rizzo, and Madisyn and Allison Wakefield. He is also survived by his in-laws, Garth and Linda Bruce and Bonnie Jaros, along with nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Lillian Van Slyke; his sisters and spouses, Marilyn (George) Kaulfuss and Natalie (William) Williams; his brothers-in-law, Milton Bruce and Phillip Jaros; and his nephew, David Kaulfuss.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Chuck's life at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 North Market Street, Johnstown, New York. Calling hours will be Friday, October 9th, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Eucharist Service and Remembrance will be Saturday, October 10th, at 10:00 am, followed by interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, New York.
