James A. Hayes

James A. Hayes, 83, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, with his loving family by his side.

Born on September 7, 1942, in Gloversville, New York, James was the son of the late Clarence Hayes and Idella (Cosselman) Hayes. He was the devoted husband of Barbara L. Hayes. Together, they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and unwavering support for one another.

After earning his Doctorate in Education from State University of New York at Albany, James dedicated his career to higher education. Over the course of many years, he served in a variety of leadership roles before retiring as a Dean of Students from Herkimer County Community College. His positions included Head Resident, Residence Hall Director, Director of Housing, Director of Residence Life, Dean of Students, counselor, and teacher. He also published several educational articles, gave numerous professional presentations, was associated with numerous professional organizations, and was the recipient of many awards and honors recognizing his contributions to higher education. His career took James and his family across the country, with positions at institutions in Arizona; Albany, New York; Delhi, New York; Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas; Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida; and finally, Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, New York. Throughout his career, James was respected for his leadership, unwavering commitment to higher education, and genuine dedication to helping students and colleagues reach their full potential. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and campus, leaving a lasting impact on the many lives he touched.

Above all else, James cherished spending time with his family. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by those he loved, creating lasting memories and celebrating life's special moments together. Outside of his family and work, he enjoyed playing in the HCCC golf league, smoking his Cuban cigars, sipping Cabernet wine, and drinking craft beer. He was athletic and active throughout his life and participated in several sports/activities, such as racquetball, water aerobics, working out at the local YMCA, and running. James will always be remembered for his response of "Better and Better" when asked how he was doing. Another popular phrase he was known for was "Work, work, work, work, work." He was passionate about his sports cars, his teal Mazda Miata convertible and grey Ford Mustang.

In addition to his beloved wife, Barbara, James is survived by his daughter, Susan (Gary) Hayes-Manning; grandchildren, Ashley (Brad) Ambrosino, Abby Hayes, Marissa Hayes and Jaxson James Hayes Manning; great grandson, Gage Ambrosino; and many extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his son, Scott Michael Hayes.

Family and friends are invited to attend a public visitation on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Homes, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, New York 12078.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care located at 108 Steele Street, Gloversville, NY, 12078, in memory of James.

James will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his lifelong commitment to education, and the kindness and integrity with which he lived his life. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
