Mary Jane Lomanto

May 18, 1934 — Jun 14, 2026

MARY JANE LOMANTO — beloved aunt, grand-aunt, great-grand-aunt, sister-in-law, friend, colleague, nurse, family historian, formidable NY Mets and Giants fan — died June 14, 2026, at Chapel Oaks, Rochester, NY.

Born on May 18, 1934, Gloversville, NY, Mary Jane was the eighth and youngest child born to Rosario and Maria (DeRocco) Lomanto.

She was the last of her siblings, predeceased by siblings and spouses James (Rose) Lomanto, Concetta (Humbert) Salluzzo, Joseph (Elizabeth) Lomanto, Salvatore (Elizabeth) Lomanto, Frances (Philip) Spencer, Edward (Anne) Lomanto, and Angelo Lomanto. She is survived by her sister-in-law Grace (Angelo) Lomanto.

MJ was an aunt of vigorous devotion. Having no children, she delighted in her 22 nieces and nephews, 44 grandnieces and nephews, nearly 30 great-grandnieces and nephews — to each of whom, until late in life, she sent a teddy bear at their birth. She carried the grief of outliving six nephews and one niece. She is also survived by a bounty of cousins (and their families), and a wide circle of friends.

She graduated Gloversville High School class of 1952, where she was Class President, then graduated St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1955, where she began her nursing career. In 1963 she took a position at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York City (now Columbia University Irving Medical Center), where she served for the rest of her career. She retired as the Anesthesia Supervisor in the Anesthesiology Department, in 1997. She took special pride and pleasure in family members who became medical professionals.

She was an avid follower of all sports and was particularly pleased to see the growth of girls and women’s sports. She greatly enjoyed her many friends on weekend outings, travel, sharing books, and the friends she made at Chapel Oaks.

A memorial service will be held on July 14, 2026, at 1 pm at Chapel Oaks where family will receive her many friends from her 8 years as a resident.

Funeral services are scheduled for July 25 at 10 am at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Gloversville NY, with interment to follow at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Johnstown, NY. The services will include a wake beginning at 9am prior to the funeral.

Contributions in MJ’s memory can be made to the St. Ann’s Foundation, 1500 Portland Ave. Rochester, NY 14621.
