James Richard Sloan
Oct 9, 1949 — Oct 27, 2026
- Sloan. James Sloan. His customary greeting made a statement and always produced a laugh.
- Under the fedora that he often wore, you’d note the sparkle in the eyes on that handsome face.
- When he was 13 years old, his cousin Diane took him to see his first 007 film… and Jim
- successfully adapted the infamous introductory line.
- A gentle man who loved film, photography, writing, long drives along country roads, animals
- (but not chickens!), his nieces and nephews, and most importantly, his wife Ellen. Jim and
- Ellen met while playing volleyball at Northeastern Junior College and while all others laughed
- when Ellen got knocked in the head, Jim went over to ask if she was okay. They were married
- for 51 years and were parents to their beloved pets - Savannah, Maggie,, Beauregard, McGee,
- Murphy, Hemingway, BooRadley, Scout, Atticus, Bella Blue and Bella Blue Two.
- In the early 1960’s, the Sloan family moved from Nebraska to Longmont where Jim and his
- sisters Cheryl (John Danielli) and Karen (Craig Smeins) attended Longmont schools. The
- youngest of three children born to Dutch and Melba Sloan, Jim was a devoted son. After his
- mother was diagnosed with dementia, Jim and Ellen moved back to Longmont and he became
- his parents primary caregiver, always showing them loving care.
- Jim’s service in the U.S. Army took him to Germany, where Ellen joined him. While stationed
- there, they were able to travel around Europe and experience cuisines that they incorporated
- into their entertaining back in the states. Get-togethers at the Sloan’s were filled with great
- food, much laughter and welcoming hospitality.
- After his service, Jim attended the University of Northern Colorado, graduating with a degree in
- Journalism. He worked at Rocky Flats and Jefferson County School District, retiring in 2014.
- His nieces (Lyndsey Toeppen, Dani Langenberg-Miller, Becca Schultz and Samantha Schultz)
- and nephews (Grant Toeppen, Ben Klarich, Adam Klarich, Shane Smeins, Jason Smeins and
- Andrew Danielli) have special memories of times spent with Uncle Jim… the letters he wrote,
- the stories he’d relate, but above all, he was that cool uncle who never judged.
- Sadly, like his mother, dementia impacted Jim’s life and slowly took away the genial man we all
- knew and loved. He found solace in his shop, with his cat, old movies, weekly Pilates classes,
- his caring neighbors and a few old friends.
- As his family, we encourage you to reach out to those in need of a smile and donate to help
- eradicate dementia. We would like to thank the caring and attentive staff at Longmont United
- and the kindness provided by Jim’s hospice team.
