James Roy Steele

Aug 15, 1941 — Aug 28, 2026

James "Jim" Steele, 85, of Greeley, Colorado, formerly of Letts, Iowa, passed away on August 28, 2026, in the presence of his loving wife.

Born on August 15, 1941, in Washington, Iowa, to Mabel Fern (Harrison) Steele and Roy C. Steele, Jim lived a life characterized by hard work, deep kindness to those around him, and a fierce loyalty and love for his family. He graduated from Washington High School in 1960, after which he farmed before later being employed through Louisa-Muscatine Schools as the Director of Maintenance.

In 1964, he married Kitty (Weise) Steele, and together they built a life of love, laughter, and warmth through good times and bad. Jim had a great sense of humor and was always quick to offer a helping hand to neighbors and friends. His family will fondly remember his quirky sayings and unique wit, especially his parting advice to "be careful, some roads have no curves" and his favorite toast, "here's to mud in your eye."

An outdoorsman at heart, Jim enjoyed fishing, horseshoes, archery, and—above all—spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in passing by his parents, Mabel Fern and Roy C. Steele; his sister, Maxine Kelly; his brother, Clifford Steele; his brother-in-law, Leighton Kelly; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Steele.

Left to honor his memory are his loving wife, Kitty Steele; his children, Jeff (Traci) Steele of West Liberty, Iowa, and Terri Steele of Greeley, Colorado; his grandchildren, Justin and Kara Cousins, both of Greeley, Colorado, Courtney (Tyson) Lamb of Bennett, Iowa, and Ryan (Rochelle) Steele of Davenport, Iowa; as well as several great-grandchildren.

Per Jim’s wishes, there will be no pending services.
