Aileen Thatcher

Aileen Thatcher, 82, of Chicago, Illinois, and later Tucson, Arizona, a loving mother and grandmother, accomplished psychologist, and dedicated community volunteer, died in the early morning of February 28, 2026, with her daughter Vicki and sweet dog Marley by her side.   

Aileen survived an extremely difficult early life and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Michigan State University, sitting her licensure exam and becoming a mother in the same month in 1977. She served her community in public and private practice until she retired in 2006, then transferred her energy and work ethic to volunteering for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Reid Park Zoo, Tucson Symphony, Arizona Opera, Arizona Theatre Company, and Broadway in Tucson.

Though known primarily by her colleagues for her skill, knowledge, and direct approach, friends and family also knew Aileen for her loyalty, sensitivity, and mostly secret but profound silliness. Aileen dedicated her career to helping her patients create lives full of love, happiness, and safety, and her retirement afforded her the opportunity to turn that focus inward and find her own.

Aileen is survived by her daughter Vicki Otto; grandson Benjamin; son-in-law (emeritus) Sixten; brothers John (Lisa), Joseph (Sally), and Steven (Karen) Petergal; and many marvelous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Andrew “Pete” Petergal, her cherished stepmother Elizabeth “Betsy” Petergal, and her sister Liz (Sal) Gambina.

A celebration of her life will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Tucson Botanical Gardens, Porter Hall, 2150 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson, AZ 85712. The family asks that guests wear bright colors and bold patterns that honor Aileen’s exuberant style and love of the Arizona desert. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to Casa de los Niños or the World Wildlife Fund.
