Maureen "Mo" Ouellette

Maureen Ouellette, also known as MO, beloved community leader and dedicated mental health professional, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025. She was a pillar of the Catholic community and an advocate for youth ministry, education, and mental health throughout her life.

Maureen was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and raised in Tucson, Arizona, where she attended Sacred Heart School and St. John’s School. She later graduated from Salpointe High School in 1960 and pursued her higher education at the University of Arizona, earning a degree in English. She furthered her education with a Master’s in Counseling and Guidance from the University of San Francisco and later received a degree in Pastoral Theology in 1988.

Throughout her career, Maureen worked tirelessly to support young people and their spiritual and emotional well-being. She started as a volunteer in Religious Education programs at Santa Cruz and Cathedral, which led her to become deeply involved in youth ministry. She helped create and foster programs that brought together various religious communities, including the Eucharistic Missionaries of St. Dominic.

From 1975 to 1981, Maureen served as the Youth Minister at St. Odilia Parish, and it was during this time that she was instrumental in the establishment of the “Youth Ministry Pilot Program.” Her leadership in youth ministry expanded further when she became the Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Tucson, a position she held for many years. She was deeply involved in leadership training and retreats, and she played a crucial role in building up the youth ministry program in Southern Arizona.

Her passion for supporting youth and young adults continued even beyond her tenure in the Diocese, working as a therapist with Tohono O’odham Behavioral Health from 1998 to 2007, and later in various volunteer roles, particularly in grief and loss support within the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Maureen’s legacy is marked by her devotion to helping others, whether through her work in youth ministry, her counseling roles, or her extensive volunteer work. She was a tireless advocate for the underrepresented, especially in her work with youth programs and the search program. She continued to give of herself even after retiring in 2007, Maureen never stopped giving. Whether through retreats, leadership trainings or quiet moments of mentorship, she continued to share her wisdom and warmth with all who crossed her path.  Her influence ripped through generations in classroom, churches, counseling rooms and communities..

She is survived by many friends, former students and colleagues, who she touched through her work, her ministry, and her compassion.

Maureen will be remembered not just for what she did, but for who she was: a woman of deep faith, boundless generosity, and fierce love the others.  Her life remains a testament to what it means to lead through Christ.

And perhaps Maureen's greatest lesson to all of us was this: sometimes, the post powerful gift you can offer is simple to Be.    Present, Listening, Loving,   Just as she always was.
