Donna Eileen Kellogg
Jul 18, 1984 — Dec 3, 2016
Our beloved daughter, Donna Eileen Kellogg, 32, of Oakland, died of smoke inhalation on Dec. 3, 2016, among 35 other young adults in the tragic Ghost Ship Warehouse fire that occurred in Oakland, Calif. Donna perished in a group of very creative, artistic, musical young people, including many of her dear friends.
Born July 18, 1984 in Paradise, Calif., to George Kellogg and Susan Johnson, Donna attended Rosedale Elementary School, Chico Junior and Senior High Schools, Butte College, Peralta College, and graduated Cum Laude from San Francisco State University in 2010 with a degree in Cinema.
Donna lived in Chico during her childhood and youth, moving to the Oakland area in 2005 to attend college and university. As a young adult, she worked for over 11 years in the Berkeley/Bay Area, including 9 years as an assistant manager for the Berkeley California Theatre. Donna was employed at the theatre until the first of this year, where she changed direction to pursue a career in the field of holistic foods and nutrition. Donna worked until her death at Highwire Coffee Roasters and Imperfect Produce while attending Bauman College Holistic Nutrition and Culinary Arts. She was scheduled to graduate from Bauman College in the spring of 2017 as a Nutrition Consultant.
Donna left us before she could complete her plan to obtain a Nutrition Consultant certification so she could work in either the prison system or rehabilitation and recovery centers. She had hoped to be able to provide the best care for some of the most difficult and challenging clients. Donna wanted to help those that most needed the care, and reflected her deep love for helping others. Her loving, considerate ways, and beautiful greeting cards will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Anyone who knew Donna knew how much she loved to be with her friends, attending shows, playing her drums, making music, art, and photography. She loved sewing and created interesting bohemian clothes with material obtained sometimes literally off- the-streets. Donna rode her bicycle everywhere, and was a noticeable feature on the streets of Oakland with her flowing red curly hair, proudly displayed tattoos, and spunky easy smile. Over the years, Donna grew into an accomplished cook of holistic foods, making pots of bone broth, miso soups, and delicious salads for her roommates and friends. She was a serious student of yoga, and sought to empower herself on the path of nutrition, healing, and a deeper connection in life. Donna will be remembered for her quick wit, spirit of adventure, and the tenaciousness that allowed her to achieve honors in all of her endeavors. Yet what we will especially miss is our Donna's silly sense of humor, her beautiful face, her endearing playfulness, and her true kindness and compassion.
Survivors include her mother, Susan Slocum; stepfather, Keith Slocum; father, George Kellogg; sister, Ginger Jimenez; and step-sister, Amy Slocum. She also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Donna was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Nicholas Garber; maternal grandparents, Eileen and Bob Sargent; paternal grandparents, Jack and Ann Kellogg; and second paternal grandparents, John and Viola Slocum.
A memorial service will be held on December 17, 2016 1 p.m. at Brusie Funeral Home, 626 Broadway in Chico, Calif., followed by a burial at Glen Oaks Memorial Park, 11115 Midway in Chico. Relatives and friends are welcome to the service and reception/potluck gathering at the Faith Lutheran Church, 667 E 1st Ave, Chico immediately following the services. Donna's drums will be set-up at the church, and guests are invited to play any kind of music.
Memorial contributions are welcome at Alameda County Community Food Bank, 7900 Edgewater Drive, Oakland Calif. 94621, or the Second Harvest Food Bank 800-984-3663. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.brusiefh.com
