Lawrence Azevedo

Larry Azevedo passed away on July 25, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 93 years old.

Larry was born on November 23, 1932, in Chico, California, to Manuel and Ruby Azevedo. He grew up alongside his three siblings—his sisters, Marge and Helen, and his brother, Richard. Family was at the center of Larry's life from the very beginning. He remained close to his siblings throughout the years, sharing countless card games, weddings, anniversaries, Portuguese festas, and the kind of lifelong memories that only siblings can create.

Larry met the love of his life, Irene, at the Toot ‘n Tellum (a drive-in diner in Chico). They were married on June 30, 1957, at St. John's Catholic Church in Chico and shared 61 wonderful years together. Together they raised two children, Karen and Brad, eventually creating a home on Johnny Lane filled with tradition, laughter, friends, and love. Larry was immensely proud of Karen and Brad and found great joy in watching them build lives and families of their own.

While Larry and Irene cherished being parents, becoming grandparents brought them even more joy. Larry treasured his relationships with his grandchildren—Kendall, Hayden, Ilyse, Tre, and Jackson. He shared a special bond with each of them. Whether celebrating birthdays, gathering for holidays, or simply spending time together, Larry enjoyed being surrounded by family.

After graduating from Chico High School, Larry began a long career as a beverage distributor originally as an independent distributor and later for Stash Distributing where he worked for 32 years. He was known for his remarkable work ethic and physical strength. Later, he became a landlord alongside Irene and in partnership with his brother Richard. Together, Larry and Irene spent decades renovating and maintaining apartments, never shying away from hard work. Outside of work, Larry enjoyed playing cards, bowling, spending time in his shop, and, for a time, collecting tractors.

One thing Larry was very known for was his commitment to a routine. After retiring, Larry could be found each day enjoying coffee or lunch and a conversation with friends. Over the years, the gathering place changed—from Winchell's to Cozy Diner, McDonald's, Wendy's, and Costco—but the routine never did. If you knew where to look, you could find Larry there like clockwork, sharing stories, laughter, and the latest news.

Those who knew Larry will remember him for far more than his accomplishments. He was witty, dependable, had a sharp memory, and was exceptionally generous. His generosity was often quiet but meaningful. He welcomed people into his home when they needed a place to stay, trusted tenants who couldn't afford a deposit, bought not one… or two.. but three Kirby vacuums because he couldn't say no to a kind salesperson, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Though he could appear tough on the outside, those who knew him best understood the kindness and generosity that defined him.

Larry was also the steady foundation of his family. Dependable, loyal, and unwavering, he approached life's challenges with quiet resolve and seldom let difficulties shake him. More than anything, he cared deeply for his family. Their happiness and well-being were always his greatest priorities.

Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene; his parents, Manuel and Ruby Azevedo; and his sisters, Marge Squillace and Helen Soares.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Azevedo; his son, Brad Azevedo; his brother, Richard Azevedo; his grandchildren, Kendall, Hayden, Ilyse, Tre, and Jackson; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Larry's legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply, the example he set through his integrity, generosity, and quiet strength, and the many lives he touched through simple acts of kindness. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Services will be as follows: A rosary will be held Tuesday, August 4th at 6:30pm at Brusie’s Funeral Home, 626 Broadway St. Chico, CA. His memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 5th at 11:00 am at St. John’s Catholic Church, 5th St. Chico, Ca. Refreshments will be available after the service at the Portuguese Hall at 1401 Broadway.
