Maria Gabski
Apr 25, 1926 — Jul 17, 2016
Maria Theresia Gabski was born on April 25th, 1926 to Johannes and Elisabeth Gievers in the small village of Borgholz, Germany. "Mia" passed peacefully on Sunday morning, July 17th, 2016 in Enloe Hospital at the age of 90. She spent her young life in Borgholz with her parents, two brothers Albert and Hans, and her sister Toni working on the family farm and attending school, where she completed high school. She married Josef Franz Gabski in 1952 and they were married for 58 years until Joe's death in 2010. Their son, Hans Josef, was born in 1953. In 1956, Joe and Mia decided to take their three year old and find a better life in America. While Mia always said she "had a good life" here, her heart always remained in Germany and fortunately they were able to visit fairly often. Mia was a homemaker and an accomplished seamstress. She took great pride in caring for her family and her home and in the clientele she sewed for over the years in Chico, many who became dear friends. Up to just a few years ago she was the lady to see in the Country House if you need some mending. Mia was a devoted parishioner of Our Divine Savior Catholic Church and had many fond memories of her time and friends in the Catholic Daughters. The highlight of her later years were her grandchildren. Being "Oma" was her most special joy and she loved every minute she was able to spend with her kids. She is survived by her son, Hans, his wife Stacey, her grandchildren Karl and Jillian in Chico and many nieces and nephews still in Germany. Her family would like to thank the Country House and Commons for their care and affection of Mia over the past five years. They absolutely enriched her life and she was so appreciative of her helpers, the cooks, the musicians who played her German songs and the beautiful garden where they let her cut roses for her room. She was also blessed by the constant support and fresh flowers from her special friends Mike and Nancy Ferguson and Dan and Gwen Box. She was so grateful for how good they were to her. Mia will be missed by us all. She really did have and live "a good life here."
