William James Van Ornum, Sr.

Mar 2, 1939 — Oct 5, 2026

William James Van Ornum, Sr., known as Jim, passed away on October 5, 2026, at the age of 87. Born in Chico, California, Jim was the fifth of nine children. He graduated from Chico High School in 1957. He then served four years in the United States Navy, where he met Lynn, his wife of 43 years. Following his military service, he built a career as an electrician with PG&E.

Outside of work, Jim found great joy spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed making memories with his grandchildren, going to the fair, tinkering in the garage, riding the 4-wheeler, teaching tree-climbing and playing games in the yard. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, and hiking in the Plumas National Forest. He also enjoyed golfing with family and friends.

Jim had a deep passion for raising Brangus cattle and was a member of the West Coast Brangus Breeders Association. For many years, he raised and showed championship Brangus cattle, dedicating himself to a pursuit that brought him great pride. One of his proudest accomplishments was purchasing a cattle ranch on the Vina Plains, reflecting his love of the land and ranching.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Stella Van Ornum; his first wife, Lynn; and his siblings, Darlene Proctor, Irene Wilson, Mary Blaser, John Van Ornum Jr., Daniel Van Ornum, Douglas Leroy Van Ornum, and Lynda Hamilton.

Jim is survived by his wife Ella; his children, Karen Grigg, Jim Jr. (Jodie), Susie Carlos (Steve); his grandchildren, Christopher and Christine (Karen’s); James and Jennifer (Jim’s); and Elizabeth and Joe (Susie’s). In addition to his 10 great-grandchildren, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Lassen House Senior Living in Red Bluff, California, for the care, kindness, and compassion they showed Jim over the last few years.

In honor of Jim’s love and support of 4-H and FFA, donations may be made to a local program in his memory.
