Barbara was born in Sacramento, California to Stanley and Patricia Richards. She attended public schools in Sacramento and soon after graduation from Hiram Johnson High School, married her husband Roger Myers. They started their 56 years of life together in Sacramento where they had two children; Wendy Lee and David Roger. In 1966, they moved to Seattle, Washington. In 1970, Barbara decided to go back to school and after full time school and caring for her children, and husband, she graduated with a masters degree from the University of Washington.
