Barry Gene Johnson
d. May 5, 2026
Barry Gene Johnson, 82, of Lyons, Colorado, died peacefully at home on May 5, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Barry was born on December 10, 1943, in Lyons to Velma (Perkins) and Shelton “Tuck” Johnson. He spent his early years across western Colorado, graduating from Hayden High School, receiving recognition as an accomplished athlete. He attended Western State College and served in the Colorado National Guard.
Barry brought energy and warmth wherever he went. He met Linda Marie Goranson, also of Lyons, and they married in August 1965. Together, they built a life defined by steady commitment, humor, and deep devotion to family. Their marriage set a lasting example for their children and grandchildren.
Barry built a long career in heavy civil construction with Flatiron Construction. He contributed to many major Front Range projects and is best known for his leadership on the ten-year, $450 million Glenwood Canyon Interstate 70 project.
Barry also shaped his hometown in meaningful ways. In 1975, he and his brother-in-law David Goranson helped form Lyons’ first Parks and Recreation Committee. With strong community support, they built the ball fields at Bohn Park, creating a place for families and youth to gather. Barry played in men’s softball and basketball leagues and coached women’s and youth teams.
As a Town Board member in 1976, he helped establish a building fee to fund park improvements. The program later supported grants and land purchases, including the railroad property that became Sandstone Park. His work continues to shape Lyons parks today.
In 1986, Barry completed construction of the family home, where he would tend to his chickens, after the kids left home. He also loved fishing and spent many hours along the St. Vrain, Clear Creek, and mountain lakes and streams across the Western Slope.
Barry is survived by his wife, Linda; his children, Patrick Barry (Michelle Gollam), Jeana Marie, and Angie Ann (John Wright); his grandchildren, Aaron Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, Katie Wright, Charlotte Wright, John Wright, Wyatt Johnson, Tucker Johnson, and Barry Johnson; his sisters, Linda Sue (Albert) Goranson and Debra (Phillip) Cisneros; his brother, Ronnie (Donna) Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents ; his son, Larry Lee; his sister, Leona Gail; and his brother Larry (Sandra Ledford) Johnson.A memorial service will be held Friday, May 15, at 2 p.m. at The River Church in Lyons.
