Liem Chanh Nguyen
d. Oct 1, 2026
Liem Chanh Nguyen, 81, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2026, at his daughter’s home, surrounded by his loving family and under hospice care, following a brief battle with metastatic lung cancer.
Liem was born in Hanoi, Vietnam, and later came to the United States following the Vietnam War in search of a new beginning. After three years of separation from his beloved wife, Ly, he was finally able to sponsor her to join him in the United States. Together, they began building their life and raising their family, first making their home in Ogallala, Nebraska, before moving to North Platte in 1984.
It was in North Platte that Liem established Oriental House of Foods, a restaurant that would become a cornerstone of the community and a lasting part of his legacy. Through decades of hard work and dedication, Liem built more than a successful business—he built relationships. He genuinely enjoyed spending time with his customers, sharing stories, catching up on their lives, and proudly talking about his children and grandchildren. To Liem, his restaurant was not just a place to work; it was a place where friendships were made and community was built.
Liem was an exceptionally hard worker who took great pride in providing for his family. He rarely took time away from the restaurant and was well known for complaining about going on vacation. However, once he arrived at his destination, he always found a way to relax and enjoy himself. His strong work ethic, determination, and unmistakable personality were just a few of the qualities that made him so special to those who knew and loved him.
Above all, Liem cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. His family was a constant source of joy and pride, and he loved sharing stories about their lives and accomplishments with anyone willing to listen. His legacy lives on through the family he built, the countless relationships he nurtured, and the business and community he helped shape through his many years in North Platte.
Liem is survived by his beloved wife, Ly; his daughter, Nancy (Zach) Schaefer, and grandchildren, Charlotte and Henry, of Frederick, Colorado; his son, Taylor (Kelsey), of Loveland, Colorado; his son, Victor, of North Platte, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.
A viewing was held on October 6, 2026. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in North Platte, where family, friends, and members of the community will have the opportunity to gather and honor his life.
Liem will be deeply missed by his family, friends, customers, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to perseverance, dedication, and the importance of family and community. Though he may no longer be behind the counter at Oriental House of Foods, his presence will remain in the many lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
