Norma Jean Fields Garland

Norma Jean Fields Garland, 84, passed away on Sunday October 6, 2024. 

She was born in Kingsport, TN, August 18, 1940. Her husband, John, moved his family to Alexandra, VA in 1959. They lived Northern VA for 30 years. She worked as a secretary for the Dept. of Army and then Dept. of Defense at the Pentagon. In 1989 they moved to Church Hill. She was an active member of Mt. Carmel U.M.C and loved being home with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, O.B. and Faye McDavid Fields and an infant brother James William Fields; son, Johnny Scott Garland; daughter-in-law, Jane Garland; and son-in-law, Jeff Elkins. 

Survivors include her husband, John Garland; daughter, Karen Garland Elkins; grandchildren, Shannon Land, John Garland, Jessica McVey, and Erin Albert; fifteen great grandchildren; and sister, Naomi Vick.

The family will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday October 8, 2024, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill. 

A funeral service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Craig Needham officiating. 

A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Holston View Cemetery, Weber city, VA. Family and friends who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 pm. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Darter, Gary Darter, John Garland, Travis Albert, Courtney Land and Kenneth Culbertson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel U.M.C., P.O. Box 1668, 552 Independence Avenue, Mt. Carmel, TN 37645.
