Betty Jewel Barrett

Betty Jewel Barrett, age 80, of Kingsport, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, August 27, 2015, after a lengthy illness with great unwavering faith and her family by her side. Mrs. Barrett was born June 2nd, 1935 in Scott County, VA, to the late, Will and Effie Matlock. She was a homemaker all her life and was an exceptional seamstress for many years prior to her illness. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, George Arthur Barrett; sister, Thelma Falin; son-in-law, Mike Rogers; and granddaughter, Tammy Hill. She was survived by her four daughters, Kathy Rogers, Margaret Depew (Craig), Barbara Glover (Danny) of Gate City, VA, and Sharon Davis (Joey) of Gate City,VA; son, Timothy Barrett; 11 grandchildren, Michelle Roberts, Michael Rogers, Monica Lawson, Kristie McConnell, Jennifer Hickman Bright, Jason Hickman, Jamie Hickman, Will Barrett, Jason Glover, Jodi Tate and Hope Salyers; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; two sisters, Josephine Taylor of Roanoke, VA, and Nora Jones of Church Hill; three brothers, Nick Matlock of Piggot, AK, James Matlock of Nickelsville, VA, and Rex Matlock of Flint, MI; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Rev. Eckel Herron and Terry Childers and family. The family would like to thank all the Wellmont Hospice nurses who cared for Mrs. Barrett during her declining health. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City, VA. Funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. Pat Hammond officiating and special music provided by Jodi Tate, Hope Salyers and True Faith Quartet. Interment will follow in the Powers Cemetery in Robinette Valley. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family. Pallbearers serving the family will be: Craig Depew, Joey Davis, Danny Glover, Daniel Tate, Braiden McConnell and David Lawson. Honorary Pallbearers serving the family will be: Michael McConnell, Jason Hickman, Jamie Hickman, Michael Rogers, Alex Minnich, Will Minnich, Matthew Minnich and Will Barrett.
